A graduate of the American Film Institute’s Cinematography Program, Brian studied under such notable ASC cinematographers as Stephen Lighthill and Bill Dill as well as participated in workshops with Robert Richardson, ASC; Rodrigo Prieto, ASC, AMC; and Janusz Kaminski, among others. Born and raised in the foothills of Colorado, Brian's interest in film and storytelling led him to Boston University’s film program, where he shot several high concept shorts. He later moved to New York City and worked as an assistant cameraman for some of the city’s premier cinematographers. While in New York, Outland also served as cinematographer on a number of shorts and music videos and shot his first feature, DOWN ON THE LOWER EAST SIDE. His most recent projects to date include the science fiction feature film THRESHOLD, SMORGASBORD, an AFI DWW Narrative short staring Brie Larson (ROOM, UNITED STATES OF TARA); MARIA MY LOVE, a feature film staring Judy Marte (RAISING VICTOR VARGAS) and Karen Black (FIVE EASY PIECES, EASY RIDER); and music videos for COLD WAR KIDS, THE GENERATIONALS and PLASTIC PARADE. He also recently completed the AOL on-line docu-series FOLLOW ME. Brian is currently based in Los Angeles and is a member of the ICG union as a camera operator. He shoots portraiture photography when not behind a motion picture camera.
